Meeting with unions from Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia
Union representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia arrived in the Netherlands on 15 November at the invitation of Dutch trade union federations and Agreement participants FNV and CNV. They were anxious to share their experiences back home with parties participating in the Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile.
The guests had specific tips for participating enterprises. For example, they recommended scrutinising legislation governing the freedom of association in production countries and adding conditions concerning the freedom of association in their contracts with suppliers. Enterprises were also advised to raise this subject during factory site visits. Freedom of association is one of the nine themes addressed in the Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile. It is regarded as a basic requirement for progress in other areas.
Garments and Textile Agreement
A broad coalition of enterprises and other organisations in the garments and textile sector has concluded the Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile. The coalition’s aim is to improve working conditions and prevent environmental pollution and animal suffering in production countries.
