Workshop for enterprises on the garment industry in Myanmar

Three industry organisations, SOMO and the secretariat of the Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile are offering enterprises a workshop on the garment industry in Myanmar. The aim is to provide an insight into what is involved in responsible manufacturing in "at risk" countries. Myanmar is an example of this.

Explanation by experts

During the workshop, two experts from Myanmar will explain the situation. Among the subjects covered will be the current situation in the factories to which production is contracted by Western companies. Specific attention will be devoted to freedom of association.
Growth leads to problems.

The garment industry in Myanmar has shown strong growth over the past couple of years. It provides a lot of employment but there are also negative effects. A recent SOMO report highlighted low wages, extremely long working days, child labour and unsafe work situations. It is the responsibility of European enterprises to address these issues.

The workshop is organised by Inretail, VGT and Modint and was devised in collaboration with SOMO and the secretariat of the Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile.
