TruStone Initiative: Participating companies and governments visited India
In the first week of March a delegation of companies and contracting authorities have visited the region of Telangana in India and engaged in dialogue with local stakeholders (owners/management of natural stones production sites, employers, and local governments.
The dialogue has contributed to more awareness of the idea of responsible business conduct in the region and to better understanding between the parties. As a follow-up individual companies and their suppliers will search for possibilities to collaborate for solutions.
In anticipation of the visit, a risk analysis was carried out by an independent research agency regarding the impacts of the extraction and processing of black granite in Telangrana as well as the extraction, and processing of sandstone in Rajasthan. The reports will be made available to the parties and other participants of TruStone, once they have been finalised.
The aim of the visit was to, jointly with companies and contracting agencies, understand what realistically can be expected of companies when carrying out due diligence in India, and how public procurement can take this into account. The conclusions of the delegation will be included in the final report of the pilot project Socially Responsible Procurement in the natural stone sector, which will be available mid-2020.
