Side event OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains: responsible sourcing for a just energy transition

The 15th OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains will take place on 2-6 May 2022. CNV International and other members of the International RBC Agreement for the Metals Sector will be organising an official partner session during the Forum. The side event offers the opportunity the learn more about a multi-stakeholder approach to identify and mitigate the hidden risks of the global energy transition in key mining supply chains.

With the global energy transition and the exponential rise in demand for alternative energy sources, coal mines are being shut down globally and value chains are shifting to the mining of metals and critical minerals. This drastically changes the ‘landscape’ of sourcing countries and is causing new, often hidden, due diligence risks that can’t be identified with traditional due diligence measures. To ensure a just and sustainable transition for all, stakeholders need to adopt a different approach to their due diligence practices, especially in regard to the local communities and mine workers at the beginning of the value chains. These people are the ones who are often overlooked in energy transition plans.

Multi-stakeholder approach

During this interactive webinar on May 4th, a number of unique multi-stakeholder approaches will be presented by various members of the International RBC Agreement for the Metals Sector. Various members of the Agreement and experts from both Europe and Latin America will share their perspectives, experiences, best practices, and lessons learned on how to identify and mitigate the risks in the metal value chains. In addition, different scenarios on the impacts of the global energy transition will be discussed, with a focus on the hidden risks for mine workers and their local communities and how to adequately address these while moving forward.
