Fair Impact Programme responsible large-scale copper mining in Peru
IRBC Agreement has started a second impact project on copper in Peru. In comparison with the previous impact project which focused on artisanal and small scale copper mining, the current project will focus on large-scale copper mining.
Copper is essential for the energy transition and plays a key role in both wind and solar energy, including its infrastructure such as cables and grid. As Peru is one of the world’s largest copper producers, responsible sourcing from this country is of strategic importance for companies in the sector.
Parties of the agreement participating in this project are CNV International, IUCN NL, Stedin, TenneT, Alliander, TKF and Sunrock. The project is funded through the SESAM subsidy of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and administered by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
The project aims to strengthen labour and community rights in Peru's copper value chain through multi-stakeholder dialogue and a collective action plan focused on improving working conditions, social dialogue, and responsible business practices. It will also enhance ESG risk management, transparency, traceability, and worker-employer relations across the sector.
Gender and inclusion are integrated throughout the project. Research and assessments will address the specific challenges faced by women, subcontracted workers, Indigenous peoples, and local communities, ensuring their perspectives are reflected in due diligence and decision-making. Evidence on occupational health and safety, labour conditions, and community impacts will inform targeted actions to improve outcomes for vulnerable groups.
This project will also strengthen citizen participation in mining by assessing gaps in Peru's regulatory framework, developing policy recommendations, and producing practical guidance for mining companies on meaningful stakeholder engagement aligned with international human rights standards.
Its approach, results, and lessons learned will be documented to create a replicable model for responsible mineral supply chains. Findings will be shared with stakeholders and integrated into ongoing activities of the Agreement to support wider uptake across the copper sector and beyond.
The project has started in August 2026 and will run for three years.
